Record & remembrance

Dates, places, sources, and messages — the same details as the full profile, kept on this page.

Ezzatollah (Ezzat) Ebrahimnejad, 24, was from Lorestan Province. He had graduated from the School of Law at the University of Ahvaz and was doing his compulsory military service in Tehran. He wrote poetry, took part in literary circles and kept in touch with student groups, and during holidays he often visited friends at the University of Tehran dormitories.

On the night of 17 to 18 Tir 1378 (8 to 9 July 1999), after students protested the closure of the newspaper Salam, riot police and plainclothes militia stormed the dormitories at Kuy-e Daneshgah. Ezzat was there visiting friends. He was shot in the head and also beaten and stabbed; his body bore chain marks and broken fingers. He was the only protester whose death by gunfire the authorities ever acknowledged, although at least eight people are believed to have been killed in the raid and the days of protest that followed.

No one has been held to account for his killing. Instead, in July 2001 a Revolutionary Court prosecuted him after his death for "acting against internal security" by joining the protests, and closed the case only because he was dead. He was buried in his home province of Lorestan; in 2009 his gravestone was destroyed and replaced with one that no longer mentioned how he died.
