Saeed Zeinali, born on 22 September 1976, was a 22-year-old computer science student at the University of Tehran.
On 10 July 1999 (19 Tir 1378), in the days after the attack on the Tehran University dormitories and the student protests that followed, three armed agents came to his family's home in Tehran and took him away in front of his family, saying it was only for brief questioning. About three months later he made one short phone call home, saying he was in Evin Prison and asking his family to follow up his case. They have not heard from him since.
For decades the authorities have refused to say what happened to him. In 2016 a judiciary spokesman claimed there was no record that he had ever been arrested. His mother, Akram Neghabi, his father and his sister have themselves been detained for continuing to ask. Amnesty International has called his case an enforced disappearance and urged Iran to reveal his fate and whereabouts.
