Mehdi Leilazi

Mehdi Leilazi (Persian: مهدی لیلازی; also spelled Leylazi) was a 30-year-old man who lived in Marlik, near Karaj, west of Tehran. Amnesty International's 2026 report on victims of crimes against humanity during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising gives his age and includes his photograph.

On 31 Shahrivar 1401 (22 September 2022), in the first week of the uprising after the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, he was killed by gunfire from security forces in Marlik. More than forty protesters were killed across Iran that day, in cities from Shiraz and Isfahan to Karaj, Rasht and Bandar Anzali. Amnesty International records the fatal incident in Karaj on 22 September 2022, and the Iran Human Rights Society's Alborz province list, the early tallies of the uprising dead published by Tribune Zamaneh and Iran Global, the NCRI lists, Persian Wikipedia's 1401 table and Shahidan Ghiyam's memorial all give the same place and date. In 2024 Iran International named him among the dead of 31 Shahrivar in its coverage of the second-anniversary commemorations.

His name appears in the Iran Human Rights Society's list of 662 names (no. 36) and its consolidated list, the NCRI's Persian list of 185 names (no. 77) and its list of 647 names (no. 78), Persian Wikipedia's table of the 1401 dead (no. 172) and the English and German Wikipedia lists of protest deaths.
