Memorial story

Babak Shahbazi

Babak Shahbazi (Persian: بابک شهبازی) was hanged at dawn on 17 September 2025 (26 Shahrivar 1404) in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. The judiciary's Mizan news agency claimed he had gathered and sold information about Iranian data centres and security sites to Israeli handlers, and linked him to Esmaeil Fekri, who was executed in June 2025 on similar charges. His lawyer's request for a Supreme Court review was rejected.

Human rights groups dispute the charge. Iran Human Rights said he was tortured into a false confession and that he had in fact been arrested after writing to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offering to help in the war against Russia. He was the ninth person hanged on espionage charges after the June 2025 war between Iran and Israel.
