On Friday, 19 Dey 1404 (9 January 2026), during protests on Sattarkhan Street in Tehran, he was shot in the head with live ammunition by Iranian government forces and killed. A close friend later identified his face in a video recovered from a security force member's phone that showed bodies of the dead in the street.

Hengaw Organization for Human Rights verified his identity among seven additional people killed in Tehran. HRANA's report The Crimson Winter lists Ehsan Abedini as a confirmed death in Tehran, and Iran International's Javidnaman memorial also records him.
