His family is originally from Ahvaz, and he was their second child. He had lived with diabetes and taken insulin since childhood. Those close to him remember him as kind, warm-hearted and full of energy.

On the night of Friday, 9 January 2026 (19 Dey 1404), at around 10 p.m., during protests at Kaj Square in Saadat Abad, Tehran, he was struck by two live rounds fired by Iranian government forces. The bullets hit his heart and lungs, and he died at the scene as an unarmed protester. His body was handed over to his family the following day.

Before going to the protests he had said, "Either everything changes, or I will die." On his Instagram page he had also written, "After me, no one will ever repeat me." HRANA's report The Crimson Winter lists Shahab Khorshid as a confirmed protest death in Tehran on 9 January 2026, and his name also appears on the NCRI list of additional victims (age 22, Tehran).
