During the January 2026 uprising he was shot dead by government forces at a street protest in Rasht. Hengaw Organization for Human Rights verified his identity among victims killed around 8 January 2026 (18 Dey 1404) and placed the shooting at Gaz Square (Falakeh-ye Gaz); Manoto and memorial posts place it in the Haft Howz area and date his death to 19 Dey. Posts circulated after his killing said his sixteen-year-old son witnessed the shooting. His body was returned under pressure and buried in Kiashahr; a large public funeral was not allowed.
HRANA's Crimson Winter tally lists him as confirmed among the dead, recording the city as Bandar-e Kiashahr. The government's published list of the dead names him Reza Samieipour, father Shabanali. Iran International's Javidnaman memorial and Iran Massacre documentation also record him at age 50 in Rasht.
