On the evening of Friday, 9 January 2026 (19 Dey 1404), during protests at the Tafresh intersection in South Mehrabad, Iranian government forces shot him. Iran International reported that he was hit in the abdomen, taken to hospital, and died hours later; some memorial posts also describe a wound to the heart. His brother reportedly kept his body moving in the street for hours so security agents would not seize it. He was buried at Behesht Zahra in Tehran; a fortieth-day ceremony was held there.
Hengaw identified him among five people killed in Tehran protests whose identities it confirmed, including Majid Jalilian, Mohammadreza Avazpour, Meysam Khazaei, and Shahrouz Mehrabi. HRANA's Crimson Winter tally lists him as confirmed among the Tehran (South Mehrabad) dead. The government's published list of the dead names him Yashar Soltanirad, father Ebrahim.
